The Baby of Mâcon plot
"Exploring thoroughly modern taboos"
In 1657 a play is performed for a Northern Italian audience, in which an elderly woman gives birth to a child, which is not accepted. Therefore, her adult daughter claims that she herself gave birth to the child. Because she should be a virgin, she calls the child a miracle from God, after which people from the pasture area come to them to bring gifts and be blessed by the child. The bishop's son, however, has his doubts.
