The explicit, direct nature of the dialogue made me have some doubts about the film. Perhaps it is extra impressive that it never actually becomes flat. Graphically, the film seemed less explicit to me, although Grandrieux doesn't mince words about it. It is a fairly bare-bones approach, but one that manages to get to the essence. Cinema that makes you feel like you are human.

Grandieux shows what he has to offer in a number of breathtakingly beautifully filmed scenes. Very impressionistic and experimental, although perhaps partly recognizably "Lynchian", but also completely unique in some ways.

Unfortunately, he doesn't keep that up for the entire playing time. Nowhere does the audiovisual style become less than above average, but if you want to captivate the viewer for 2.5 hours and your story is such a complete mess that your attention cannot lean on it, then your audiovisual qualities must be consistently good. as a viewer to continue to lean on it. That doesn't work here and the film unfortunately gets bogged down halfway through. In my opinion, the playing time is therefore not justified. Respect for the enormous coolness of a handful of stunningly beautiful scenes.

Difficult to really untangle a coherent plot in this Malgré la nuit. But the plot is quite linear and not so much surrounded by fantasy or dream sequences. The plot also seems to me to be an afterthought here. We are in a violent prostitution environment where criminals do not hesitate to humiliate, rape or even murder women.

Didn't 100% enjoy the style of the film unlike many others here. Technically and visually very neat. Visually very gray and dark with many black images. A camera that is also very close to the skin, which makes it all extra oppressive. The loud breathing and fear of the victims is thus catapulted into the living room. A film that you clearly have to experience.

Two Flemish people also in the casting. Not least with Sam Louwyck and Johan Leysen. The acting is certainly above average although the dialogue is quite limited.
