Excellent film about an exemplary student who hands in a test that his teacher still questions. An original story that is quite layered and manages to raise a few fascinating dilemmas. The ambiguity of some characters and the good dialogues make this more gray than black and white. Excellent acting from the entire cast.

Luce has been able to fascinate me for a long time. Because of the excellent acting, but also because it stays in the middle for a long time where exactly the film is going and who exactly did what. The big disappointment for me, however, was that the film still leaves quite a bit in the middle even after the end. I had hoped for a nice climax at the end of this slowly unfolding drama. Preferably with an unexpected twist. But unfortunately that was not the case. As a result, after seeing this in itself handsome, beautiful and intriguing film, the disappointment dominates a bit. Shame. But despite that, definitely worth a look.

Harrison Jr, Watts, Spencer and Tim Roth star in this complex psychological drama about the unrest caused by teenage Luce Edgar [Harrison Jr.] at school and with his foster parents Amy [Watts] and Peter [Roth]. Their unwavering faith in Luce comes under attack when the strict but respected teacher Harriet Wilson [Spencer] expresses the suspicion that Luce is a danger to the school. The evidence for this is circumstantial, however, and Luce has an answer for everything, but when Harriet becomes the target of vandalism, doubts grow. Under Onah's direction, Harrison Jr. are also in a gray area in the most emotional scenes, so that you as a viewer are just as insecure as the parents. The screenplay by Onah and JC Lee convincingly shows how and why the parents switch positions several times and what impact this has on their family life. Onah may not have ready-made answers for the traumas and racism that young people like Luce have to deal with, but it does provide plenty of food for thought.
