“There are days I'm invisible, I can do whatever I want. I must be careful not to lose that ability.”

Strong movie. Louder Than Bombs is sometimes incoherent and a bit distant, but the story itself is enough to impress. Joachim Trier knows how to create a nice atmosphere, and the actors also do an excellent job. Especially the subplot around the younger brother (Devin Druid) is strong, and you can't go wrong with actors like Byrne, Eisenberg, Huppert and Strathairn. Downside is the subplot around Eisenberg and his wife/mistress. The idea behind it is nice (son makes the same mistakes as his mother), but the execution is mediocre.

The chastened war journalist Isabelle [Isabelle Huppert] died in a car accident two years ago. Her husband Gene [Gabriel Byrne] and eldest son Jonah [Jesse Eisenberg] know more about the circumstances of the accident, but younger son Conrad [Devin Druid] does not and apparently struggles the most with Isabelle's death, partly because of this. Two confronting events reveal the cracks in the family: Isabelle's colleague Richard [David Strathairn]'s decision to dedicate an article to her death and Gene's affair with Conrad's teacher Hannah [Amy Ryan]. Complex family drama requires the necessary attention and is well acted, but Trier's direction is quite heavy-handed. Trier obviously spent a lot of time and money reconstructing the car accident, but you wonder why.

Picked up because it was a Joachim Trier. Not on the level of his most famous films Thelma, Oslo or The worst person in the world. This movie, however, didn't tell me much. Not bad bad, but significantly less (interesting). A film about bereavement and the complex relationship between father and his adolescent son.

Definitely had my attention until half way through, but that gradually ebbed away later. A film with various subplots that are not always fascinating and are even incoherent. Therefore takes a bit too much hay on the fork. Cinematographically well done, but I didn't expect anything else. Too bulky in content.
