Asghar Farhadi does it again. At intervals of two years, he surprises us with true masterpieces: About Elly (2009), A Separation (2011) and in 2013 Le Passé .
The film starts with a beautiful opening scene, in which the main characters on either side of a glass wall do not understand each other, but they do understand. The final scene is even more impressive, when the viewer is mesmerized staring at two hands clasped together, looking for any sign of life.

In between, Farhadi tells a haunting story about a family, where the collection of mutual relationships looks like a Gordian knot. It is a film with two faces. The first part revolves around housewife/mother Marie and her almost explosive ties with her ex, her current boyfriend and her children. The second part focuses on a suicide attempt and the feelings of guilt that this evokes in the various (possible) people involved. As the puzzle pieces of the past gradually fit together, everyone makes frantic efforts in their own way to deal with that past. Emotions regularly run high.
It is a beautiful film about confusion, love, despair, anger, mistrust and guilt. In short, a film about people of flesh and blood, with their despair and with all their good intentions and flaws.

Based on a careful screenplay, director Farhadi knows how to get the best out of his actors, just like in his previous films. For me this is by far the best movie of 2013. So, if it's up to me, get the Oscars ready but ready for Asghar Farhadi, Bérénice Bego, Pauline Burlet (the daughter) and little Elyes Aguis.
Like Farhadi's two previous films, this one is also in my Top 10.

wow.

Exciting from start to finish. Contrary to many of the opinions, I think the whodunnit part does add an extra to the story. Here and there, therefore, perhaps somewhat unbelievable in the details, but it does give a much broader starting point about the situation because in this way much more involvement of the people is created where they would otherwise have been left somewhat as an afterthought in the story. And that would have been a shame, because it is the complex role that all the characters in their environment play in the story that makes it such a strong film.

In addition to the strong and original story, the film is especially beautiful because of the very strongly played roles, and the very beautifully filmed images in their almost inimitable beautiful setting. A bit cinematic, and also clearly looking for prizes. But is that bad?

Le Passe

Another fantastic film by Farhadi. The man never disappoints, and Le Passé is another beautiful human story about a number of characters who have to face the painful consequences of their actions. Old sore, painful divorces, dealing with loss and fatal decisions, bearing the consequences of these decisions, a disturbed mother-daughter relationship, etc. Farhadi again chooses cheerful food...

But the man is a master at writing dialogues that feel lifelike, and developing complex and recognizable characters. And with Rahim, Bejo, Mosaffa and the young Burlet, he has also cast fantastic actors. I completely forgot that Bejo played in The Artist, and her first scene is a nice nod to this great Oscar winner.
