A masterful movie! My second Farhadi pleased me so much more than the not sickening Salesman; in Separation, however, the situations are even more palpable and the story grabs the viewers by the throat from minute 1.

A bickering couple who is forced to get a divorce in court is the start of a two-hour drama in which the husband of the couple is then forced to hire a nurse for his demented father. This nurse again has her own problems and all this culminates in a confrontation with major consequences.

Farhadi gets on top of the skin in a story in which truth, honor, interpersonal relationships, law, parenthood, social class and faith all play their part. Through lifelike dialogues, often in a quarrel-like atmosphere, the film also provides a unique insight into Iranian society. All the main characters, no matter how well they mean it, have their own weaknesses and faults; they are fallible, they are human.

At the end of the story there are only losers left, except for the viewer, who has seen a true masterpiece. A beautiful film.

Very solid.

A film that is finally worthy of being in the IMBb top 250. That was the only other reason I watched the movie, otherwise I would have completely overlooked it to be honest. Movies from the Middle East are also less appealing to me in general.

But in the end was still surprised by a strong effect in this drama. I was quite tired of those 123 minutes beforehand, but director Farhadi knows how to use them skilfully, although 123 minutes is just a bit too much for a film that doesn't tell much further than a court drama and some side issues.

But the rest of the film is very poignant. Very strong arguments for the rest that also keep the film interesting. I like it, although 80 minutes of arguing is sometimes a bit too busy. You may also have a moment of rest, and this film does not give you much rest.

Good, strong acting from Moaadi. Hatami and Hosseini also impress, but Moaadi is definitely the clear winner here. Farhadi and Bayat I thought less. Especially with Bayat I couldn't take the expressions seriously. I often thought it was a bit too much.

For the rest, the film lacks a bit of a "wow" feeling. It doesn't really have any real impact either. Because despite a lot of arguing, the rest of the film lacks some pressure and frustration. It is fascinating, and at times penetrating, but the impact does not materialize.

But otherwise a skillfully put together film. Visually nice and raw and realistic. Normally I don't find this kind of simple filmmaking interesting visually, but here it really benefits the film. One of the few movies in which it actually fits. Anyway, I don't expect a bombastic 100 million blockbuster from Iran any time soon.

After 14 years of marriage, Simin [Leila Hatami] wants to divorce Nader [Payman Maadi] in order to give their 11-year-old daughter Termeh [Sarina Farhadi] better opportunities. However, Nader wants to continue to care for his demented father [Ali-Asghar Shahbazi] and therefore the judge does not approve the divorce. However, Nader is forced to hire a Razieh [Sareh Bayat] to care for his father during the day, even though he can barely afford it. The disappearance of a sum of money leads to a conflict in which both families involved get into a conflict. An excellently acted family drama and indictment of the social and legal inequality between men and women. The men are in charge, but in fact both Nader and Razieh's husband [Shahab Hosseini] depend on their wives for survival. Well-deserved winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
