Film that sticks and is definitely worth thinking about.

Much more than the murderer who is eventually caught and brought to justice. A portrait of justice and the psychological analysis of the people who are part of it and those who follow it, with the strongly emerging socialism as the backdrop.

Michel Galabru and Philippe Noiret are simply stunning in their two strong, varied character roles that differ so much, aren't they..!?

Film is based on historical data, although the actual names have not been retained.

Bertrand Tavernier ("Coup de Torchon", "Une semaine de vacances"...) never disappoints.

Tavernier films... that's not for everyone... The users who rate this film highly are more than right to do so. It is in itself an intelligent film and Philippe Noiret is impressive as Judge Rousseau who wants to talk his victim to the gallows. It is not just about a serial killer (child rapist) who has to be tried for his crimes.

Tavernier is a man of polemics, not a black-and-white thinker. You get the feeling that Bouvier should not be executed for what he did, but for who he is: a poor bastard, probably mentally deranged, who can't defend himself against the legal machine. The theme of class struggle is more central than ever in Le Juge et l'Assassin. The judge uses this opportunity to climb the social ladder, more than concerned about the truth and the nuances of Bouvier's trial. For example, Rousseau is not in favor of having Bouvier medically examined for insanity and does everything he can to maintain that the man is not crazy. From then on you as a viewer start to frown whether this meets the definition of "justice" and you realize how crooked and immoral the judge is in his actions.

Thought it was a heavy dialogue film and that is also typical for Tavernier. Moreover, you also have to feel the meaning or direction of what is being said, and on top of that you have to be able to frame everything in the socio-political climate of that time (eg the impact of the Dreyfus case, patriotism). I find this film highly accessible and he seems to want to cram too much into it. I am now stuck at a 3* but a review can only do wonders.
