Great actress that Déborah François. After L'enfant I wanted to watch it again. Director Denis Dercourt (of whom I haven't seen anything yet) can build up a strong atmosphere. You may be questioning revenge 10 years after a 10-year-old girl fails a piano exam because she's distracted. I'd rather be mad at that fan who came for an autograph than at the pianist.

But the strong point, as said, is the atmosphere. You just feel the revenge feelings of Mélanie who apparently has been dealing with this for 10 years and wants to sneak in. First by gaining her trust and getting closer to Ariane and then striking. Magnificently. Even though it is a completely different film and story, in terms of tension I had to think of Swimming Pool.

A good film and the appearance of Déborah François is breathtaking in any case. A Belgian actress with great sex appeal. But besides 'being beautiful' she can also act very well as it turns out. Belgian talent, even though no cat probably knows her in Flanders.

The characters are more than what they seem. The cellist seems like a neat gentleman, the pianist seems like a confident career woman, Mélanie Prouvost (Déborah François) seems like innocence incarnate. What lies beneath the surface, the facial expressions and the unspoken conflicts between the characters create a subtly built up tension.

Mélanie has years of pent-up frustration. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a concert pianist herself, like Ariane (Catherine Frot). The woman she admired has become her object of hate.

The milieu of classical music is well represented. We don't see child prodigies who can do everything by themselves; a lot of studying, rehearsing, tendinitis, stage fright, the tension of playing in front of a jury, fear of failure, the knowledge that every wrong note, every carelessness is punished. It is bad that young talent is so put on the grid instead of being encouraged. When she stops, those same people say they're sorry.

Mélanie is an anti-heroine who would score low on emotional intelligence. Her reaction to problems is wrong, but you can secretly sympathize with her.
