In the first part of the film, the filmmaker takes his time to get to know the family, headed by Giovanni, the psychologist, calm, calm and imperturbable and extremely attached to his family, the second part tells the story of the impact of a family drama on the other members of the family, their different way of coping with grief, their frustrations and traumas with the cracks in their mutual relationships, their feelings of guilt....

There are several films that deal with this theme. This one, however, stands out because of the natural simplicity that emanates from the characters when undergoing the drama, convincing and credible and without exaggeration. Not a tear that is not meant and it is touching to observe the turnaround in Giovanni, however he too derails and creaks.

Good direction and well thought out editing. The scenes follow one another, without much frills but with meaning and right in line with the story.

setback.

With La Meglio Gioventù in mind, I had hoped that this would be the second successful Italian film and that they would get high marks in a chain . Unfortunately, La Stanza del Figlio only came with a normal pass. Too bad, because the expectations were certainly there.

The main problem I have with this movie is that I don't get involved in the story. I felt no sympathy for the characters in any way. While Moretti tries to portray all characters as humanely as possible. But somehow it just won't work.

The film puts a heavy focus on the drama. Everything feels heavy and there is really no air or freshness. That's not a disaster in a drama film, but if the heavy sentiment doesn't work, it does start to stand out in the end. A little lightness is ultimately desirable then.

The acting is quite ok. I thought Moretti's acting was a bit too stoic, but Morante and Trinca do well. The psychiatrist scenes were intriguing, but sparse. In addition, I did not find every patient acting convincingly. Moretti manages to humanely portray the family, but does not actually know how to do this with the patients.

The rest of the film is solid. Human characters, a well-established family and an unexpected twist. It had a lot of potential to be compelling, but it just doesn't want to be. I don't know if the problem is that Moretti is focusing on the wrong objects, or that the characters don't get me in personality, but it just didn't want to have an impact on me.

Beautiful images here and there, especially the last minutes were beautiful locations. Usually Moretti was allowed to make more use of the Italian landscapes, but otherwise it is fine. Enough detail, enough interpretation. But it just lacks an impact.

Film about grieving when the son dies. Each surviving family member deals with the grief in their own way. All this in a setting of a family home atmosphere. Not very spectacular and that's how it felt to me too. Intense and subdued, but I just couldn't get into the movie.

The big ALS question is also asked in a parallel world, but it does little to help. Life is what it is and everyone tries in their own way to deal with the sadness. Missed maybe a bit the balance between engagement and sentiment. All in all a very decent film, well acted, quite authentic.
