La Leggenda del Pianista sull'Oceano plot

"An epic story of a man who could do anything... except be ordinary"

A trumpet player is in need of money and knocks on the door of a music store to sell his trumpet. He plays his trumpet one last time and the owner, astonished, puts on a record of the exact same song that came into his possession recently. The trumpet player knows the pianist featured on the recording and claims the record is the only recording ever made of the man. The pianist, named 1900, was born on a ship and never set foot on land. To the world, the man did not exist, but for 6 years the trumpet player had the pleasure of playing by his side. The trumpet player tells the story of 1900.

I immediately went for the long version and personally I thought it was too long. It must be said that I am not a jazz lover at all. After Cinema Paradiso I was a fan of Tornatore, so I wanted to taste some Italian cinema again.

Unfortunately, after a while I find such an old boat a bit lacking in atmosphere compared to the authentic streets and houses that you find in Italy itself. The film has a number of good scenes but it is too little and it remains very distant. I don't think Tim Roth really fits into the drama genre because there is nothing to read on his face, way too cool, way too vague. The trumpeter is guilty of overacting and what's wrong with his pupils that always slide from left to right. Up and down again and again, I've never seen anything like it before... So the ending actually left me completely cold even though it seemed like almost 3 hours of character development. Playing the piano is something I didn't eat, so whether it was good or bad, I really don't know. It's definitely not my style, but I managed to get through the movie anyway.

So the film actually fails very strongly on the sentimental level, or at least for me. The explosion of the boat is also incredibly fake. Not as bad as La La Land but more than 2* I won't give this one either.

Solid.

Despite the long Italian title, there is little Italian about this; or it has to be the director and the music of morricone. This is genuine Hollywood drama, comparable to titles like Forrest Gump or The Shawshank Redemption. It is sometimes almost melodramatic and some developments are highly unlikely. You should therefore consider The Legend of 1900 as a kind of fairy tale.

Tim Roth plays a strong role as a piano virtuoso. With Pruitt Taylor Vince I especially noticed his eye defect, although he's not bad either. Bit of a Tom Hanks light. For lovers of this kind of elongated sentimental stories, like me, there is plenty to experience. Beautiful setting on a kind of Titanic clone with sometimes beautiful decors. Unfortunately, the music really disappointed me. Only a few original songs and a lot of Morricone's uniformity. Bit of a shame for a musicmovie.

With a better soundtrack there would have been more; now it hangs at a more than sufficient level. 3.5*

Film that searches for beauty and finds it.

Beauty in the music, the people, the emotion, the experience, the image....

Beautiful and spiritual story with life lessons and choices.

One of those films that really grabs you and makes you realize every now and then that it really takes you in.

Delicate humour, even if it is melancholy, is woven through it and provides relief.

Character strong roles found in 1900, Max, the music dealer...
