A group of 13-year-old boys are in love with the beautiful Malèna, the wife of a local soldier. One of the boys, Renato, constantly follows her and spies on her in her most intimate moments. Maléna

Atmospheric film with an enchanting Monica Bellucci. Maléna is a coming of age story about the young Renato, who becomes obsessed with the stunningly beautiful Maléna. But the film is also a tragic story about Maléna, who has to deal with the hatred, envy and jealousy of a small village.

Maléna is a somewhat distant and unreachable character, but that makes it all the more clever that director Tornatore and Bellucci make sure that you sympathize with her. Especially at the end there is a gruesome scene that cuts right through your soul. But for the rest, Tornatore opts for a quiet tempo with beautiful cinematography and wonderful music by Morricone. With an excellent final section where you see the hypocrisy of such a small village, but also the connection between Renato and Maléna. Beautiful.

Great movie if you see it without prejudice. It is by no means a 'coming-of-age' story, although it is so often labeled. If you look at him with that thought, he is indeed disappointing; because the protagonist hardly develops in the film. Nor does the title character develop. It's not a movie about developing the characters in it; it is a film about the chaotic society and how mean people can be. It's about the curse that the female beauty can be and the consequences of that.

It's not a war movie either. If you would like to see a good film about the Second World War, I recommend Life is Beautiful. War is in the background (and in the foreground if you want to see Malena as an allegory for Italy: beautiful but corrupted).

The cinematography is beautiful and Monica Bellucci is feminine perfection and as a woman this film stirred up a lot of emotions in me. How far will people go to break you out of jealousy?

Strong drama. The story is simple but beautifully developed by Tornatore. The structure is fine and step by step we get to know the main characters. Although in the beginning it does take some searching where the film wants to go. There is, however, a kind of light tension that can be felt continuously, as if you as a viewer know that something is going to derail. Well done. The settings are very nice and it looks like you are watching a huge play. The acting is also fine. Bellucci plays a strong role. The phenomenal soundtrack is the icing on the cake. top. 4.0/4.5
