Ideal setting for a 70s erotic film. Brave beautiful wife is cheated on and decides to take it herself.

Lots of Borghese blah blah, all beautifully filmed as usual by Visconti.

A portrait of the Italian aristocracy from the 19th century.
A banal and also disgusting (the murder of the baby) story.
Not exactly fascinating, with the many dialogues, erratic views and attitudes regarding marriage, love and loyalty, but the film excels mainly because of the visuals. Opulent sets and costumes, neatly arranged characters, romantic and idyllic images, image compositions down to the last detail, and generally a successful representation of the pageantry of this society.
An unmistakable Visconti. Beautiful but not the class of a "Rocco..." and especially not of "Morte a Venezia"

And on Classic Sunday it's the Visconti again, which of course makes it an unmistakably big name. Does that always mean success? No, because I had very little experience with 'Rocco and his brothers' and 'Death in Venice'. Then why are you starting it? Simple, it just depends on what you come across at the thrift store, and besides, there is always that desire to unravel, to understand, what someone else sees and finds so good. And so it will come as no surprise that this slow-paced costume drama was not for me.

And actually the analysis of this film, and what is offered, is also well told by a few other users. L'Innocente is a costume drama set in decadent Italy at the end of the 19th century and undoubtedly a must see for those who love splendor, ballrooms full of costumes and ball gowns and strict etiquette. Because that is where this heavy love drama takes place around Tulio, who calmly gets away with it himself, but then does not tolerate this from his wife, resulting in jealousy. It makes you think about the submissive role of women, where Tulio can actually do his thing unpublicly amidst all the social splendor or appearances, depending on how you look at it.

Yet the film does not bring me more than colorful sets and beautifully dressed characters, because the dialogues are stiff and endless about love, loyalty, marriage and lust, Giannini does a fine job with his characteristic head and voice, a nice character actor and what that means. concerns, and the film offers me surprisingly little other than that. In fact, it was a nightmare to sit through this drama and I did so with the utmost effort. But for those who enjoy such opulent settings and costumes, and can lose themselves in a Sisi-like background, this will be a treat. Not for me though, let's move on to the next one.
