"A cop. A waitress. A lottery ticket."

Charlie Lang is a New York police officer. He leads a quiet and modest life and has everything to be happy. His wife Muriel thinks otherwise. Hoping to one day escape from her bleak existence, she plays the lotto. One day Charlie has breakfast with a colleague in a snack bar. When he wants to pay, he doesn't have enough money with him to tip Yvonne, the waitress. In his coat he finds his wife's lottery ticket that he still had to have validated and promises Yvonne half of the possible winnings. That same evening after the lottery draw, the ticket in question turns out to be worth four million dollars...

I went to watch this with not too high expectations, but I thought it was a wonderful film. Very simple, but effective. The balance between comedy and drama is balanced, as neither are too prominent. You could say that it is neither meat nor fish, but that is not how I experienced it.

The cast is an important positive factor. Nicolas Cage plays pleasantly and timidly, Rosie Perez is the bitch she's supposed to be and Bridget Fonda is so sweet in this movie that you wish her all the luck in the world; A character I sympathized with very quickly. Isaac Hayes and Wendell Pierce also make excellent contributions. The fact of the film is already very nice, but because of the sparkling cast it also comes out well. I read elsewhere that the chemistry between Cage and Fonda would be disappointing, but I found that - after a somewhat stiff start - quite convincing. In any case, the film managed to entertain me effortlessly. The clichés, which I knew were coming, I take into the bargain. In fact, I wouldn't have wanted this charming film without it.

3.5*

Nice to have seen. I did not know this film with Nicolas Cage and Bridget Fonda. Saw it on TV yesterday on Christmas Eve. I liked it. Muriel has a very annoying voice and she also has an unsympathetic role. That she loses her money in the end to Jack Gross who plunders her fortune, is completely granted to her. The film is about the two important things in life, love or money. It depends on who you are because one chooses for money and the other for love.

Fairly entertaining, but terribly well behaved and predictable.
