Nathalia (Sandrine Bonnaire) is the wife of a wealthy dentist from Saint Petersburg. It is 1907, shortly after the first revolution against the Russian Tsar; a new rebellion is brewing, but it will take another ten years. Nathalia is a happy woman, although she seems icy cold. She is the mother of a boy and has two lovers: a conservative-minded sculptor and a young, passionate revolutionary, Volodia (Denis Siniavski), who later commits suicide for her sake, but first her husband is murdered and the cool Nathalia becomes suspicious. In the park she meets a stranger (William Hurt), who sets out to make contact with her, through which she will later learn to understand herself and free herself from the unbearable pressure of her lovers and her sister.
