Reasonable film about a captain who is called to the carpet after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This film concentrates a bit too much on the various melodramatic side plots. They are easy to watch, but the film goes on too long for that. A cast with quite a few well-known names, with John Wayne at the forefront.

In Harm's Way - number 5 on Ryan Szimanski's 'best navy films' list.

I have to add that his list is about films in which the course of events on a ship during wartime plays a major role, or the ships are beautifully depicted. This film scores quite high on both aspects. Too bad that it is not really a very good film outside of that.

Mainly because there is no clear choice about where the film wants to go. Drifting around in wartime, shooting a bit, a bit of passenger, sailor runs amok and causes damage - the plot goes in all directions without there being a line to deny. Little fun to be had for ordinary people, all the more interesting if you follow Szimanski and his channel - nice to see the ships in action, to see all the details and mechanics that you can see in a museum ship being used - and as far as I can see also quite correct.

And otherwise you can always spot actors. Quite a few famous names from back then, and also not-yet-famous names that still had to become that. That also doesn't really make it a good film by the way. I can't get any further than 'interesting' with it, and that's not really a compliment.
