Hart's War plot

"Beyond Courage, Beyond Honor."

Lieutenant Thomas W. Hart is a young officer who is captured a few months before the end of World War II. Together with some fellow sufferers, he is almost immediately sent to a German prison camp. There he meets Colonel William A. McNamara, the leader of the American prisoners of war in the camp. After a while, McNamara orders the lieutenant to take two colored men into his barracks. The two men are American pilots, but they can count on little sympathy from their colleagues. Shortly afterwards, a murder is committed and Lieutenant Tommy Hart is asked to defend the falsely accused.

Of course we already have countless 2nd world war films. (although you don't hear much about it lately) and Hart's War was another one. And this was certainly not a bad WW2 movie. But just very well put together. It also varies a bit from war movie to escape movie, prisoner of war movie, murder mystery and then suddenly to a courtroom drama. Hart's War has such an extensive and varied theme and Colin Farrel once again puts down a rock-solid role as Hart, the man it's all about. And in that camp we are again presented with a very strong role of Willis and the film switches from one to the other, as I described above. The cluedo game on that camp is also well put together.

The atmosphere is also very well put together and that wintry landscape is always well in place, so that the film also looks cold, gray and dark and you are also very engulfed in the atmosphere. War film and a winter landscape as a backdrop is always a good combination.

Hart's War simply has a lot to offer, top cast, good story and a varied theme. Excellent movie.

4.0*

Did I ever see this? Apparently not, it had to happen at some point, so here it is. And the image beforehand, which went towards solid but otherwise not special, was a bit correct.

The situation is nice, however, with a fraction of the Ardennes, the Skorzeny commandos, capture and incarceration in the camp. The images of the arrival at the camp in particular impress as comprehensive and grand in scope. The bombardment of the train by the P-51 Mustangs, on the other hand, is all a bit too much in terms of design. It all comes across a bit too dramatic, ditto as far as the music is concerned, and then the way in which they make it clear to the pilots that they are bombing POWs, well...you believe it yourself. It is already clear to me that Hart's War is going to be a game of tinkering in terms of good and bad points.

The camp is beautiful, as said, with the usual divisions. Farrell is mainly decent, Willis is nice too, but of the actors I think Cole Hauser is the strongest. The soundtrack has nice moments but is also regularly on the overdramatic side. The case is interesting, yet it is also doubtful that one would actually be given so much freedom. It could be, but I've never heard of it. It is also interesting that the defendant actually has to lie in order to disguise an escape attempt, to arrive at the denouement with the escape and that the lawsuit serves purely as a distraction, nice. A pity is the attack on the factory again. As said, it is still a game of tally.

It cannot be called realistic at all, what is worse is that the film says almost nothing to me and I can recall a lot in memory purely on the basis of notes. No, this is not a topper, and a re-watch doesn't make much sense here, but a sufficient one for the effort can be removed.
