"Detective John Hobbes is searching for a criminal he's already met... already caught... and already killed"
Police Officer John Hobbes (Washington) finally catches serial killer Edgar Reese and witnesses his execution in the electric chair. Then when several people around him whistle the same tune as Reese did during his execution, Hobbes finds out that he is dealing with a demon that can switch bodies by touch. When Hobbes kills someone who was possessed by Reese, he must prove his innocence and also try to defeat Reese, but this is very difficult because how do you defeat someone who can be anyone?

A bit too tame for me, this supernatural thriller in Copland. More of a crime with a demon as the perpetrator than something that can boast of atmosphere, mystery and/or tension. Every now and then a nice shot of a street shrouded in mist and up to and including the first murders it's still going, but it's not possible to make a sizzling atmosphere. Like some of the music choices, Azazel's filtered looks come across as a bit clumsy.
And with that, it soon becomes clear how the fork is in the stem. Not a problem in itself, were it not for the fact that the scenes that should put it under power don't quite get off the ground either. As soon as Time is on My Side returns, it should give you goosebumps, but Hoblit lacks a certain finesse for that. Moreover, after that hitting becomes more or less a repetition of moves.
Nevertheless, it is still entertaining. About three-quarters of the film moves along quite well, but just when you expect a speed-up to the finale, there is still some drama around the corner. So it was all about that trick in the lock. Well, come on. Aside from that weird brother, a movie with a solid cast, but the best demon? Elias Koteas. Too bad he messes things up in the beginning.

The film starts as an exciting police thriller and then collapses when it becomes a somewhat mediocre horror film, but the end is exciting again. The mix of police thriller and horror mixes badly in this film, but the film still manages to captivate. Between 3 1/2 and 4 stars.

Somehow I hadn't included the beginning, but the ending of the film fixed this shortcoming. The atmosphere and dialogues as well as the film images were of excellent quality. That is in any case a condition for being able to immerse yourself in a beneficial story. I found the "witty" detective mix very successful here. I didn't think I could trust cats with all their so-called "extra" lives. They also listen so badly, if not at all, as if they live completely in their own/other world. But this film makes me view these introverted bird killers with even more suspicion. In Australia nowadays they have to stay on a leash outdoors for a reason.
