Young pacifist Carl Dixon (Michael Douglas) returns to his family in a small farming town after college in New York. His family has been made up of proud soldiers since the Civil War. He wants to win the respect of his father, who clearly sees him as a disappointment, by signing up for the war in Vietnam.
