Glorious 39 plot

The film is set between London and the idyllic British countryside during the period before the Second World War. At a time of uncertainty and great tension, the story revolves around the distinguished Keyes family, who are eager to maintain their very traditional way of life. The eldest daughter Anne is a budding young actress who is in love with the State Department official Lawrence. But her seemingly perfect life begins to unfold dramatically when she stumbles upon secret footage of the appeasement movement. While trying to discover the source of these recordings, dark secrets are revealed that lead to the death of a very close friend. When war breaks out, Anne discovers the truth and flees to London to find confirmation of her suspicions. However, she is captured and only then does she finally begin to discover how terribly she has been betrayed.

Given the star cast, a disappointing thriller about subversive activities at the start of World War II. The story is rather vague and uninteresting for most of the film. Towards the end, it improves somewhat, but it is too late and too little.

Another film about an aspect related to WWII, namely the appeasement between British Prime Minister Chamberlain and Hitler, just before WWII.

With this situation initially in the background, but later as the core of the event, the story is told of a young woman in love whose life is completely turned upside down.

Beautiful design, solid structure and good acting by a well-known British cast.

Enjoyable soundtrack, impressive even in the final stages.

"It's not always a good place to go, the past." A bit of a hybrid film: the first half has a nice Brideshead revisited atmosphere, the second half a kind of paranoia thriller, with the common denominator being the character of "Glorious" Anne who slowly but surely realizes what lies beneath the veneer of this British-upper-upper-class. Rarely will a film have assembled such an impressive cast, and all those actors easily keep the film afloat during the shift from one genre to the other, with Bill Nighy as reassuring as ever and Jeremy Northam as ambiguous as almost only he can be, plus Julie Christie ("I can usually only enjoy the countryside in very small doses") in a small but nice supporting role. Of course, most of the attention goes to Romola Garai, and with her acting talent and her beauty she keeps the viewer's attention at all times, which in combination with the beautiful camera work results in a handsome, half warm, half oppressive film with a strong emotional punch at the end.

Fun fact: young Walter is played by Sam Kubrick-Finney (1994-), the grandson of the famous director, in one of the three films he appeared in; he then chose a career in music, as the singer-guitarist of the metal band Shields.
