Beautiful film, with which Welles proves to be a versatile director.

And not only as a director by the way, because it is also Welles who absolutely steals the show in this film as an actor in the role of Falstaff. How fat Welles has become here. He gives his character verve, charisma and above all a huge dose of humor. I still had a good laugh a few times at this gentleman.

It helps that I had (English) subtitles, because otherwise the dialogues are sometimes difficult to follow. The absolute highlight of the film is clearly the much-praised battle, which looks sublime. It looks a bit like Braveheart, but in this case that is certainly a compliment. The camera is very close to the skin of the warriors, every arrow and sword hits hard and I really felt like I was part of the battle. It even looks so good that it doesn't look dated even now.

After the battle, the film does not quite maintain its high level. The dialogues did not all come through equally well and towards the end it was sometimes difficult to stay focused. Still, I quite enjoyed this original film. Welles has mixed up Shakespeare a bit in this film, but it has definitely become a drinkable mix, although you have to be open to it. Anyone expecting a simple, easy to understand film will be disappointed.

3.5*

Fallstaff is one of the most popular characters in Shakespeare's impressive oeuvre, and the only one whose popularity even prompted Shakespeare to write a spin-off: The Merry Wives of Windsor. Fallstaff [Orson Welles] is a voluble, boorish drunk and a favorite companion of Prince Hal [Keith Baxter], the heir to the throne who enjoys himself immensely in Fallstaff's company, but in doing so incurs the wrath of his father, King Henry IV [John Gielgud].

Chimes at Midnight is actually a shortened version of the plays Henry IV Part 1 and Part 2, in which the scenes with or concerning Fallstaff have been incorporated. Cutting into Shakespeare's work will never produce anything better than the original, but Welles at least knows how to film the fascinating story about the changing relationship between Fallstaff and the future Henry V in style. Moreover, the leading roles are cast with great force and the smaller roles (Pistol is a personal favorite, as are Mr Silence and Shallow) are also excellently portrayed. That makes this an excellent introduction to Shakespeare's work, although it is advisable to watch the film with subtitles, since Welles (of course) uses the original text.

Very enjoyable film by Orson Welles, who was working from Spain at the time. Chimes at Midnight, or Falstaff, is a Shakespeare film adaptation of (I think) Henry IV, in which Welles himself plays one of the leading roles as the freeloader Falstaff. I didn't know much about the source material, but it is very entertaining and actually well put together in every respect. Fine acting, the Shakespearean dialogues and especially the creative insults that regularly appear work well - it doesn't come across as old-fashioned to me at all, but rather original. And visually it also just looks good. That the plot as a whole is a bit less interesting, so be it, but in the meantime this was a nice watch.
