Elysium plot

"He can save us all."

In the year 2154, there are two classes: the very rich people who live on a space station called Elysium, and the rest, who have to live on an overpopulated Earth. Minister Rhodes (Jodie Foster) is a harsh government leader who does everything he can to protect the luxurious lifestyle of the residents of Elysium. New anti-immigration laws are the result. That doesn't stop the Earthlings from trying to reach Elysium, though. In every possible way.

So anyway. So some are not 'more equal' than others after all. Oof.

In a world where the gap between rich and poor is widening due to an invisible ideology that penetrates our lives ever deeper - you know, neoliberalism...does ring a bell, right? - a film like 'Elysium' important. And hopeful. Because no matter how classic the design, the structure, the sauce of American sentiment, the brutal action content and the stereotypical heroism: nobody can miss the principle of justice that Neill Blomkamp insists on throughout the film.

Further? Craftsmanship. The contrasts between good (Matt Damon, that is the face of the scarred innocence, right?) and evil (Sharlto Copley and Jodie Foster as characters who are monstrously magnified for incomprehensible reasons) are fine, but otherwise it stands out [ i]'Elysium'[/i] little to fault. Except – as mentioned – the very traditional setup. But if it's to shout a kernel of truth loudly from the rooftops, then that's allowed – at least as far as I'm concerned.

3.25*

LA, 2154: After three years in jail for a robbery, Max Da Costa [Matt Damon] struggles to make ends meet in a world where the power gaps between rich and poor are greater than ever. Due to the negligence of his employer, Max is fatally poisoned in an industrial accident and has only five years to live. His only hope of salvation is Elysium, the place where the rich live and where every disease can be cured. Max's attempts to get there are mixed with a plot of political intrigue, betrayal and the like in a muddled story with too many elements of well-known SF classics. This is at the expense of characters and the interest of the viewer.

A variation on "Sander and the Gorge" in many ways. Not that this is a great film, because the "elite" that lives and lives "in heaven" is portrayed in a very caricatured way, although the lack of any empathy has been hit. Furthermore, quite a few unbelievable incidents and events, but oh well ... Damon plays his role more than reasonably well, although the ending could have been a little less sentimental. Anyway, mediocre film, which binary reveals various interfaces with contemporary society.
