About Elly had been on the list for some time. And when I put up the trailer again to see if I felt like it now, I had to think (to a large extent) in terms of storyline Todos Lo Saben [Everybody Knows]. And that didn't seem like a stupid idea, because that film is from the same director (and writer) as About Elly. My 5th film by Asghar Farhadi, who has never disappointed me.

About Elly also takes the time to build atmosphere and let you empathize with the characters, and then drop a plot twist that has more impact due to the built-up sympathy with the characters. Events that raise questions, fascinating to watch. Although the course is less impressive than with Todos Lo Saben. About Elly can count on good actors. Director Farhadi is also clearly in control and knows how to tell the story clearly. I hope to see more of the man in the future.

The first half hour gives a very different picture of Iran than the news. We see modern, westernized people with cars and cell phones. The women play volleyball with the men. They do wear shaylas (headscarves), and the water pipe is also an oriental element.

After that, the mood changes. The German quote ("Rather a bitter end...") foreshadows Elly's fate. She did not dare to break off her engagement, which points to a lack of emancipation. The Caspian Sea transforms from a sunny holiday resort into a sea monster that can swallow humans. The storm helps with that.

The style is in line with European realism. Handheld cameras follow the actors, who appear natural and spontaneous. Sometimes this is deliberately edited jerkily and abruptly, such as the kite scene - the last images of the living Elly. Tricks and guiding background music are avoided. The emphasis is on dialogues, psychology and social relations in a changing country. This was a breakthrough for Golshifteh Farahani, Shahab Hosseini, director Farhadi and Iranian cinema in general.

These Farhadi films are always very decent, but I've never gotten higher than 3.5* so far. Again very vulgarly filmed, but fortunately also strong and well acted in content. What begins as a fun weekend at the seaside for a group of friends (townsfolk) turns into bitterness when Elly disappears. The scary features of the company quickly surface. About Elly ironically doesn't go much "about Elly" ... in the movie she's basically a fringe figure... her sudden disappearance is mostly a pretext to expose a rotten middle-class mentality where lying, blaming and avoiding responsibilities are the order of the day... Being a bit misanthropic myself, I like these kinds of themes.
