BlackBerry plot

"Work hard. Fail hard."

Research in Motion, co-founded by Mike Lazaridis, is responsible for the birth of the BlackBerry. The smartphone reaches its peak in the 2000s. Two decades later, he falls off his pedestal. The legal disputes with the parent company RIM, of which Jim Balsillie is co-CEO, also do little good to the reputation of the BlackBerry.

Mike [Jay Baruchel] and Doug [Matt Johnson] are the founders of Research In Motion [RIM] who, in 1996, developed the technology that would form the basis of BlackBerry, the first smartphone. However, they do not have the right personal qualities to convince investors of the opportunities the technology offers. Jim Balsillie [Glenn Howerton] steps up as the lifesaver and risks everything to make RIM a success. Doug sees the changing corporate culture that Jim is deploying as a threat to it, leaving CEO Mike torn between loyalty to the early developers and the chance to break into the international marketplace. Skips between comedy and historical reconstruction and therefore falls between two stools. The story is interesting, but deserved a more compelling reconstruction with a more engaging and charismatic cast.

I have too little affinity with the theme of this film about the rise and fall of a hi-tech company. Then two hours is quite a long sitting.

Entertaining, intriguing film about the rise and fall of Blackberry. At times comical (laughing at nerds without commercial talent). Reminiscent of The Office in terms of humor, film style and acting. Halfway through the film gets a lot more serious and that doesn't do the film any good.
