Benny's Video plot

Benny is a fifteen-year-old boy with parents who don't have time for him. Benny finds compensation in frequently watching video films and playing with recording equipment. His room, closed off from the outside world, is crammed with monitors. Benny's blurred perception of reality prompts him to act over which he has barely any control.

Mediocre film about a boy who prefers to watch violent films alone in his room. A portrait about a nihilistic adolescent boy. Like most of Michael Haneke's films, this one is distant and also quite slow. There are long stretches where little happens. And above all, the film is a lot less intrusive compared to quite a few of his other films.

With this film I regularly had to think back to his Haneke's later work Funny Games (Film, 1997). Not that the content was the same, but the same cold psychopathic atmosphere was similar, just like the equally minimalistic slow camera work. The film starts off hard and is not for sensitive animal lovers. Such an air pistol was also used by hit man Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men (Film, 2007) and is a formidable murder weapon. Little did I know that this was going to pop up later in the movie...

I especially found the attitude of the parents interesting. I didn't have the impression that the boy was being punished, quite the contrary. There was still a candy trip from to catch your breath. Taking on responsibilities was not immediately in the family's dictionary. The murder itself is also Haneke's, I would dare to say. Visually invisible, but auditory it is horrifying to the icy silence. It already hurt the ears of the pig, let alone now.

And then the boy himself, emotionless and indeed nihilistic only to have no explanation as to why he went to the police (revenge perhaps?). The parents are then heavily involved and I suspect he enjoys it too...
