"It's never too late to become what you might have been."
Grant (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona (Julie Christie) have been married for many years. Now they are both in old age and they lead a comfortable life in the countryside. Until Fiona suddenly has problems with her memory. Determined not to burden Grant with her problems, she is admitted to a retirement home. There, however, she falls in love with Aubrey, another patient.

Great acting by the protagonists, with some very nice scenes. But overall I was not very impressed. It sounds rather cynical, but a subject like Alzheimer's by definition offers a lot of drama. This film gets stuck in a fairly one-dimensional narrative, without really adding anything to the familiar. As a result, combined with a TV movie-like setting, Away from Her unfortunately does not rise above mediocrity.

A reasonable movie. I was not very impressed with the story and the execution. It was difficult for me to keep my attention. It didn't really touch me, despite the sensitive subject. The acting is good. A 6. 3*

Involuntarily I thought of Haneke's Amour (2012), but that's a completely different story and this film doesn't reach that high level.
Although the years are starting to count, Julie Christie is still impressive as (almost) ever. It is mainly her portrayal that keeps this film going. By the way, Gordon Pinsent has a beautiful, soothing voice.
