Amer plot

The film shows different times in the life of the woman Ana. First there is little Ana, who spends a night in the big old house of her grandfather, who has just passed away. In the room next to her is her grandmother, who is engaged in all kinds of ceremonies and rituals so that her husband can safely go to heaven. Then Ana is an adolescent, and she is shopping in the city with her mother for a day. Then there is the adult Ana, who returns to the house where she has always lived. She wants to refurbish the house, which is now for sale.

Thank you.

The directors indicated at the start that 'Go with the flow', and this ode is indeed an audiovisual experience. The great opening tune and the use of color remind me of films like Suspiria, it's a shame that the music doesn't come back later, but fortunately there are considerably magnified sound effects.

I think the first part of the triptych with Ana as a little girl is the best because of the suspense, the voyeurism and the immersion in colors. Very atmospheric with some beautiful scenes. In the second episode there is a different tension around the now young and beautiful woman: sensual and grim at the same time, but with an indefinite course.

The repetitive (image) tricks become too much for me at a certain point. Nice, but excess is harmful. Towards the end there is more physical threat and it becomes more manageable with a few stylish scenes that (partly suggestive) feel quite painful.

However, there is hardly any plot. It is mainly focused on some (giallo) style features such as zooming in on body parts (lots of eyes), shiny objects, animals, etc. It does not fully focus on a cat-and-mouse game, a whodunit element or any other common thread and I miss that very much.

In any case, Ameris both a nightmare and a weird sultry dream. What rating to give here, I have no idea... although it is a good sign that it is still haunting my head and I can't get enough of the music.

I happily join those who are extremely positive about this film. Intriguing and chilling psycho-horror full of giallo references (or odes if we can believe the choice of music) and artistic subtleties. It may not be everyone's proverbial English cup of tea, but the beer in my hand slowly but surely became lukewarm, warm, undrinkable. Hmmmm, this sounds very wrong, by the way, if the theme is 'sex', or rather, and I agree with Sinterklaas, 'sexual abuse and its psychological consequences'. I actually had a glass of beer in my hand...

And yet I also have to agree with the critics. Because Amer is in fact not a giallo, as it has been marketed and raved about. The elements are there, but Amer is much more of a psychological horror film à la (strange that no one has mentioned it yet, or I haven't read it properly) Polanski's Repulsion. The giallo ode almost seems like an unintentional gimmick.

Highly recommended, especially for fans of Polanski's Repulsion.

Better a good steal than a bad one... Great production!

Nice, although there could have been a lot more.

Clearly intended as a kind of ode to the Giallo. A genre that I quite enjoy, and although Amer does quite a few things well, it absolutely cannot match, for example, an Argento.

I was a bit disappointed, especially visually. Apart from a few nicer moments, many scenes were nothing more than a pitch-dark room, with some objects or people only illuminated by a certain color filter. Not really what you would call ''beautiful'', especially rather lazy. Light years away from a lot of Suspiria in that area, while this film is about 30 years more recent.

What was nice were a number of typical Giallo features, such as the zooms, and especially the many striking camera angles that were used. The soundtrack is also very atmospheric and mysterious, but the soundtrack itself is often a bit unnecessarily noisy and too present, unfortunately. It's a shame, because as soon as the film builds up some atmosphere here and there, it is sometimes undermined by these kinds of elements.

Because of my love for the Giallo, I don't have the heart to give it lower than a (small) 3.0*, but I had hoped for something better, especially after Cattet's and Forzani's great contribution in the ABC's of Death omnibus . There are a number of cool scenes in this video, the good intentions are certainly present, but unfortunately there are also some things that don't make much sense.

So a small 3.0*, but I still have confidence in the director duo.
