Up the Yangtze plot
A luxurious cruise ship carries a company of mainly Western tourists across the Yangtze River. A varied selection of food, drinks and entertainment is brought on board by well-trained Chinese staff. The landscape that slips by meanwhile will disappear for good in the not too distant future as a result of the construction of the gigantic Three Gorges Dam. Presented as the symbol of progress in modern China, this mega project is forcing two million people to relocate. Entire towns and villages are disappearing under the steadily rising water table, and although the government is helping to build new homes, hundreds of thousands of poor landowners have been duped. In the film we see how they seek refuge with their meager possessions, higher up along the banks of the ever-expanding river. Two stories of young people working on the ship illustrate the contradictions of modern China. 'Cindy' Yu Shui actually wanted to study, but her parents can't afford that, the poor farming family is literally at the mercy of the water. While she is washing the dishes exhausted in the galley, the handsome and good English-speaking 'Jerry' Chen Bo Yu counts his tips.
