George Orwell's chilling vision of the future in '1984' is no longer mere fiction. The Communist Party of China uses a combination of big data and millions of cameras to monitor all Chinese citizens. With the help of propaganda campaigns, espionage tools intended to restrict all freedoms have been presented as "safe", "convenient" and, above all, "smart". Any violation of the rules imposed by the Party results in penalty points and anyone who betrays neighbors or (even better) calls neighbors out on non-compliance with the rules can count on bonus points. This documentary follows a number of people who deal with bullying, intimidation and invasion of privacy on a daily basis, mainly because of criticism of the Party. That point is quickly made and what follows is mainly a confirmation of the fact that China is a totalitarian regime – and that it is better to avoid China like the plague. Not only a warning for China, but also for what the future may have in store for us if we allow our daily lives to become increasingly dependent on technology.

It is tempting to see Russia and China – our two great enemies who are also increasingly challenging the West to enforce a multipolar world that will replace Western hegemony – as opposites: Russia is a terrorist state, looks medieval, brutally attacks opponents, intimidates, threatens, tortures, wages war, tries to take advantage of chaos and China is a surveillance state, looks futuristic, strives for harmony and is more subtle in its approach. But China also eliminates dissidents - it tortures and manipulates at most psychologically - and with its full blown surveillance state has created the perfect totalitarian state that reduces the population to slaves. It is also horror - as this documentary shows - and you wonder whether the West will also follow that path, now that the technology is available and total control is attractive to every political camp.
