Tillbaka till Ararat plot
The film deals with the forgotten genocide in Armenia, where the Turks killed 1.5 million Armenians between 1915 and 1917. The situation of the Armenians, who have been scattered around the world ever since, is compared by Holmquist to that of the Palestinians today. No images or other documentation of the mass murder has survived. Holmquist has therefore concentrated on oral history. To show how closely the past is intertwined with the present, he has chosen to interview the survivors in front of their children and grandchildren. This resulted in moving and shocking moments. Because the young people also cherish the dream of one day being able to return to Ararat.
