The Deepest Breath plot

"One dive. One breath. One chance."

Alessia Zecchini descends with a single breath to remarkable depths beneath the sea and enters what she describes as the last silent place on earth. The Italian champion is determined to set a new world record in freediving, a dangerous extreme sport in which participants try to reach the greatest depths without using diving equipment. Participants often experience blackouts on takeoff, necessitating the help of safety divers such as Stephen Keenan, a free-spirited Irish adventurer who fell in love with the sport. Alessia and Stephen have developed a special bond and train together in this documentary to dive into a long tunnel under the Red Sea.

Outstanding documentary about a woman who wants to become a freediving champion. An intriguing and, above all, very pure sport. The diving community is well established here. But the sport is also a bit crazy and the blackouts are terrifying to watch. Two beautiful personal stories and although the fatal ending is soon clear due to the build-up, it remains exciting.

A person needs stimulation and challenges to live. But in the modern affluent society more and more natural challenges are disappearing. The result is that people look for kicks. It explains why it has to be more intense, faster and harder. Man gets caught in a web of addictions, true life is increasingly passing him by (The Optimist)

I thought this was a beautiful documentary with beautiful images and someone who, after a long search, finally finds a purpose in his life, but unfortunately....

I had a few (stupid) questions. Why don't those divers who are responsible for safety just carry oxygen bottles? And were Alessia and Stephen really just friends?

I don't think there are many films about this subject - and subject in the broadest sense, because there are countless disciplines. Le Grand Bleu (1988), one of Besson's first films. Sous Emprise (2022), a Netflix inspired by the story of Audrey Mestre. And now this one. Each clearly different, but the common thread is simple - the rather obscure sport of diving on your own breath. Much better known in France than with us, although, yes, there is also a Dutch record holder: Nanja van den Broek. 130 meters of variable weight, try that.

This one is the only one of the three films I mention that follows a documentary style, and although that is done very neatly and it certainly has an added value to see the real protagonists - and some scenes are not really something you can do as an actor. let it play - does a small voice in my head itch that this story might come into its own better if it were turned into a romanticized, scripted and acted film. Or if it should have been a documentary, then with a different scope.

But even with that, it has become a very nice doc. It's that I'm not much into swimming, otherwise I'd definitely like to give it a try. Well, not that deep by itself.
