The film looks more interesting than it is. It's called a murder mystery, but the investigation takes place primarily in the subconscious—the setup is somewhat reminiscent of, say, Shutter Island—but as is often the case in dreams, the result is incoherent, and promising clues ultimately prove meaningless. The lesson the psychologist learns from her delusions is that she should now listen to what her patients say instead of recording their conversations, but the lesson the viewer learns is that dreams are deceptive and that psychoanalysts are self-interested thieves who think they know secrets but deceive themselves just as much as their patients. Ultimately, the most impressive thing about the film is that Jody Foster speaks French very well.

A Paris-based, American-born psychiatrist [Jodie Foster] struggles with spontaneous crying spells after learning of the sudden death of her former patient, Paula [Virginie Efira]. Lilian sets aside her skepticism and visits a hypnotist [Sophie Guillemin] to help her stop crying. During the session, she has a cryptic dream that leads her to suspect Paula was murdered, either by her daughter [Luana Bajrami] or her husband [Mathieu Amalric]. Foster's superb performance prevents this from descending into farce. Zlotowski keeps you guessing about the legitimacy of Lilian's train of thought and leaves it up to you to judge. Delightfully unpredictable, superbly acted, and with a resolution that offers plenty of food for thought and discussion.
