TAC: Taking Haart plot
TAC stands for Treatment Action Campaign: a movement launched by Zackie Achmat that advocates equal access to treatment for AIDS for all. AIDS has spread very rapidly in South Africa. While Nelson Mandela was very open about the issue, he committed culpable failure to act during his run for the presidency, perhaps for fear of offending traditions and customs. His successor Thabo Mbeki took an inconsistent approach and used numerous charlatans to fight the plague. Result: from 1994 to 2001 the number of seropositives increases from 1 to 5.4 million. In protest, as long as discrimination controls access to medical care, virus-infected Zackie Achmat refuses any treatment. After strong mobilizations and legal proceedings, his movement achieves partial victory when (against the will of multinational pharmaceutical companies) generic drugs become available.
