Silvesterchlausen plot
The Silvesterklausen in the villages of the Ausserrhodischen Hinterland and, recently also in the Mittelland (Teufen) is a well-known event. It takes place on December 31 or January 13. Especially in the villages of Urnäsch and Waldstatt, Silvesterklausen on January 13 is special. Men and children don masks and cowbells or bells and go door to door to drink booze or lemonade through a straw. The children are full of deciduous and coniferous branches or moss. Some men dress up as women. After the drink, a yodel or bell concert is given. This spectacular winter use probably stems from the celebration of the postponed St. Nicholas feast. Urnasch also houses the Appenzeller Brauchtumsmuseum, which focuses on the Silvesterklausen and other regional traditions. This film takes a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations for this highly anticipated day.
