Roaring Abyss plot
This musical road movie travels through Ethiopia, the East African country with a population of ninety million and where eighty languages are spoken. “Roaring Abyss” is filled with field-recorded field recordings of all kinds of traditional music - from wind bands from the time of Emperor Haile Selassie to the Azmari, the Ethiopian equivalent of the European bard. They are traditional sounds, contained in very different scales than Western music, which more and more have to make way for a singer with a synthesizer or another Western instrument. This film captures music passed down from generation to generation for centuries, played on traditional instruments such as the washent, masinko, krar and begena. Director Pinto traveled for two years through Ethiopia, "the country where even the coffee beans sing", says a resident of the former province of Kaffa. Like all inhabitants, he is very proud of the traditional Ethiopian music, which must never be lost.
