In his debut film RIZE, fashion photographer and clip director David LaChapelle introduces us to the phenomenon of "krumping", a hyper-energetic dance form in which combat clown-mime and African tribal dance meet. A breathtaking and acrobatic hip-hop dance form that acts as a revolutionary movement from South Central Los Angeles takes the world by storm. A dance form in which aggression and beauty merge with movements that are a direct response to the violence in the area. LaChapelle follows former drug dealer Tommy Johnson. In response to the Rodney King riots in 1992, he creates the character Tommy the Clown to liven up street parties and neighborhood events Tommy is popular and kids from the neighborhood join him to 'clown' along. Several new styles are emerging within the rapidly growing group, including 'krumping'. them an alternative to a life dominated by drugs and gangs.Dance battles arise in parking lots between c lowns and krumpers and soon these sports halls will fill with frenzied audience
