Regilaul plot
On the shores of the Gulf of Finland, the ancient Finno-Ugric peoples developed the mysterious music tradition called Regilaul. The songs, based on only eight syllables, are the foundation of the famous Estonian singing culture. By continuously repeating the verses, they produce a terrifying sound that aims to connect the fleeting present with the eternal circle of life. Against the backdrop of the beautiful landscape of modern Estonia, director Ulrike Koch explores the power of this music together with composer Veljo Tormis, writer Jaan Kaplinski and Regilaul singer Lauri Õunapuu. The film Regilaul shows that this traditional music still appeals to the imagination today and manages to connect nature and people in this relatively young state.
