Off the Grid plot
The United States is grappling with a severe recession and the global financial system is rocking to its foundations, but it is not part of American nationality to give up. In this road movie, the filmmaker visits a few places in the US where people experiment in different ways with a small-scale approach. For example, the town of Great Barrington in Massachusetts has introduced its own currency. In Austin, Texas, an independent radio personality takes inspiration from the spirit of the Wild West. He calls on his audience to rebel against the federal government and megalomaniac corporations like Walmart, which are draining tight-knit communities and turning them into ghost towns. In Colorado Springs, distrust of the government is traditionally high, but the aversion to paying taxes also appears to have adverse effects on public services. In addition, some symptoms of the recession are shown: the asphalting of roads, the demolition of empty buildings and tent camps for the homeless around large cities.
