Nazareth 2000 plot
In Nazareth, 72 percent of the current 60,000 inhabitants are Muslim. However, much of the land is still in the hands of Christian institutions. This leads to escalating conflicts. Nazareth is a city with an energetic mayor and affluent residents: 'They love their Mercedes here more than their children.' It is also the birthplace of filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad, who has lived in the Netherlands for years. Abu-Assad returned to his hometown on the eve of the turn of the century and recorded how even two world leaders like Arafat and the Pope in Nazareth become extras. The protagonists in the documentary are two gas station attendants, who fight their contradictions over the addictive petrol fumes. Because in 2000 Nazareth is also a city where Christians and Muslims work together.
