Motherland plot
One of Manila's public hospitals houses the largest maternity ward in the world. It is a lifeline for expectant mothers who often live on the fringes of society. As many as 100 babies are born here every day. “Motherland” follows the three protagonists in the course of their stay among hundreds of other women. Following the cinéma vérité tradition, director Ramona S. Diaz avoids interviews of any kind, instead observing what happens in the building with its crowded corridors and shared beds in which they have to deal with a flood of births.
