Nice film in which a bachelor has to marry a rich woman as quickly as possible for financial reasons. A sometimes somewhat idiosyncratic rom-com that has not withstood the test of time, but certainly still has something to laugh about. Dryly funny dialogues and characters. Walter Matthau and Elaine May have a great time together and for Elaine May this film also marked her directorial debut.

Entertaining film, Walter Matthau acts well as usual, but his co-star and director Elaine May was also a good match.

The story is a bit long-winded here and there and there could certainly have been more to it, but it's quite a fun film to watch.

A small 3*

Walter Matthau plays one of his typical comedic roles: a schemer who hatches a plan. In the opening scene the viewer is immediately misled with a visual joke. Henry Graham lives the high life, with a Ferrari and polo games, but he is on the brink of bankruptcy. The intrigue is driven by his attempts to acquire a new fortune. The denouement is partly guessable, but it is worked out with a lot of humor, witty dialogue and an ironic climax.

Elaine May, now a sturdy ninety-one-year-old, is not only his co-star, but she also wrote the screenplay and directed it. In reality she looked good, but for this role of an unworldly botanist she made herself ugly with a wig and oversized glasses. The British George Rose plays the dignified servant, a "gentleman's gentleman", who imparts some life wisdom between all the jokes. The title has a literal and a figurative meaning.
