The Odd Couple plot

"… say no more."

Felix Ungar (Jack Lemmon) is desperate: his wife has filed for divorce. He contemplates suicide, so his friends think it's better if someone stays around him all the time. After much hesitation, Felix agrees to move in with Oscar (Walter Matthau), a divorced friend. But Felix's obsessive tidiness and fear of contamination is a thorn in the side of the messy Oscar...

One of my all-time favorite comedies! Jack Lemmon as the neurotic OCD sufferer and Walter Matthau as the lazy slob are a genius duo. While at first they are always in each other's hair, towards the end they become dependent on each other because opposites complement each other. Every scene in this film is good, but I especially like the part when Felix enters the room and no one is allowed to talk about 'suicide'! Unbelievable how this movie continues to captivate even though it was filmed almost exclusively in one room.

The 70s (series) version is already very good, but this film holds up even after watching it 3 times! The atmosphere alone is enough, but if you also add the acting performances of the 2 best actors of their time, it is completely enjoyable! Enough humor, but at the same time a lot of depth in the characters, Jack & Walter don't just play this couple, they ARE this (weird) couple!

4.5 stars remain, what else did you think?! It's a damn shame that this film can't win over more contemporary viewers.

The film adaptation of the famous play. With the opening you are already completely in the atmosphere. Technicolor colors, pastel 60s costumes and a jazz score by Neal Hefti who worked with Count Basie for a while. The Odd Couple is a delightful comedy in which the translation from theater piece to film is ideal. I really like this. With the strong play between Walter Matthau and especially Jack Lemmon, who in my opinion could easily get an acting prize for this. It never gets big, but the humor works, the atmosphere is good and you have fun from start to finish.
