Elmer Gantry (Lancaster) meets Sister Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons) and together they try to sell Christianity in the US of the 1920s. Elmer is quite a hustler, but his charismatic speeches help them raise enough money to build a temple. . Sister Sharon also falls for Elmer, knowing nothing of his unchristian pursuits.

I've never been a fan of Burt Lancaster because of the same grin on his face too often. For me, this film is one of the few exceptions. Lancaster is doing well and that also applies to Jean Simmons and Arthur Kennedy. But the big surprise is of course the choice of the usually good musical star Shirley Jones for the atypical role of whore.
Nice film, albeit on the overly long side, especially since there are few new developments in the middle section.
The extensive warning at the opening of the film about the controversial content in America at the time is telling.

Good film in which a hustler and salesman comes to work as an evangelist for a group of traveling revivalists. Perhaps less topical or controversial now, but still a good story and some strong dialogues. Also a bit on the long side. Burt Lancaster is excellent in the title role.

I'm not really a fan of Burt Lancaster and this film won't convince me either. A rather outdated film with a religious theme, although in Hollywood it is of course always about love. Jean Simmons is not doing too badly, but has also done better. I notice that the film is generally received quite warmly, but unfortunately it doesn't do much for me.
