Milli Vanilli plot

"10 million albums. 1 epic lie."

Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan became fast friends during their childhood in Germany. Robert came from a broken home; Fabrice had left an abusive family. They shared a similar upbringing, as well as a future goal: to become a superstar. In just a few years, their dream would come true. Rob and Fab, better known as Milli Vanilli, became the world's most popular pop duo in 1990, winning a Grammy as 'best new artist'. However, their rise came with a devastating price, which would ultimately lead to their much-publicized demise.

Milli Vanilli is really something from my youth, and even though I didn't like it at all at the time (that awful James Brown drum sample every time), I still wanted to see this for nostalgic reasons.

Actually, it is just a deeply sad story and it is perhaps a good thing that it is clear once and for all how it all turned out this way.

Fascinating documentary about the rise and illustrious fall of the phenomenon Milli Vanilli, created by the clever German producer Frank Farian. His contribution to this excellently made and very entertaining documentary is sorely missed, but based on interviews with most of those involved, a good but above all poignant picture is sketched of one of the most infamous fraud cases in music history.

Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus were penniless dancers and entertainers in Munich when they came into contact with top producer Frank Farian, best known for Boney M, who immediately saw that he could repeat that success with Fabrice and Rob. The record deal that the then 21-year-old Fabrice and 24-year-old Rob signed meant financial stability for them and a chance to become superstars. When Farian announced that he had hired singer Brad Howell and rapper Charles Shaw to provide the vocals for their debut single 'Girl You Know It's True', Rob and Fabrice realised that they had been duped. This documentary reveals why these boys went along with a lie and what the unexpected mega-success of the single and its successors 'Baby Don't Forget My Number' and 'Girl I'm Gonna Miss You' did to them. Frank Farian is the only notable absentee in this multi-layered musical documentary that exposes the opportunism of the pop industry and holds up a mirror to consumers. Because who has been harmed by the existence of Milli Vanilli? And why did Fabrice and Rob get presented with the bill for the deception instead of Frank Farian?
