Im Keller plot

Im Keller outlines the bond that the Austrians have with their cellars. The film tries to find answers to the question, what is special about Austrian cellars, and whether they are so special at all. This cinematic foray into everyday life in Austrian cellars could provide answers and raise new questions, thus bringing a little light into the underground mystery.

Well, this inevitably gives the impression of a cabinet of curiosities, as Onderhond also says above, because why else would you descend into basements or garage boxes where people do things that they prefer not to be visible from the street? On the other hand, the most spectacular scenes make the viewer less a partner than an accomplice: if that S&M couple is comfortable with their practices, who are Seidl and the viewer to gloat at the sight of the man who first licks the bathtub with his tongue and then his partner? Or is the viewer not supposed to gloat at all, not even because of that last shot with the woman who can hardly turn onto her other side in that cage? It remains uncomfortable, but in fact the scenes of the man with his favorite wedding present are much more painful, not to mention the lady with the baby dolls.

Scary cabinet of curiosities that really deals in obscenities. Sometimes hilarious (dry), sometimes poignant, sometimes a bit boring. In my opinion there was just a little too much emphasis on the SM states.

But it is usually intriguing. The scum under scrutiny ranges from morbid to downright pathetic. Not very compassionate indeed, but it nevertheless offers a fascinating, sometimes comical view of what goes on within certain obscure households. Spacious 3*.

Oops, very bizarre staged documentary about eccentrics who don't just use their basement to store junk or food, but use the space to unfold their wild fantasies. One is a bit crazier than the other. The lady with the baby doll is tragic and may be the result of unresolved trauma. Yet another poses with his collection of trophies from the safari. Someone else is a Hitler adept, music is played and some smothered…

To shock, Seidl continues with some bondage and SM practices of unattractive women and men. What can be seen has already been described in detail above. Well, it looked like a cabinet of curiosities. I wouldn't really call it fascinating, not exactly disturbing because it doesn't surprise me either. Still waters, deep soils. That saying applies here. What Seidl wanted to convey cinematically and technically is a mystery to me…
