Holunderblüte plot
The former East Prussia is an area that, as visible and hidden remnants of its turbulent history, contains numerous humiliating and moving European stories. For centuries, the area has been exchanged for a penny, depending on the outcome of another war. It eventually became Russian spoils of war after World War II. Germans had to leave and families from all corners of the Russian Empire were stationed there. After the fall of the Soviet empire and the closing of the collective farms, the region fell into disrepair. In the midst of advancing, out of control nature, which is slowly reclaiming space from a community of disillusioned and often alcoholic adults, the children try to be children for a while. In his fifth film about this area, Volker Koepp focuses exclusively on their world: an enclave of playful innocence that is increasingly cleaved by the merciless facts of a perspectiveless adult reality.
