Het Bergdorpje plot
The elongated hilly landscape undulates on the horizon as you approach Vijlen, the highest village in our country. Here the landscape begins to fold and it continues uphill to the highest point in Belgium (694 m) and the top of the Eifel (747 m). Many functions have been preserved in the church village. There is a convenience store, a bakery, a hairdresser, a local produce shop, even a gallery. The local economy is the driving force behind the local catering industry. They work together and ensure that people stay in work, especially young people. But this growth has a clear downside: the original inhabitants are turning against the increased bustle in the village. Old traditions and the cherished togetherness are in danger of disappearing, they fear.
