Fraylandia plot
'Fray-Landia' is written on a sign above the entrance to a touchingly simple children's playground in Fray Bentos, a small town in Uruguay, on the border with Argentina. Until 1984, according to archive footage, a large meat processing company was located here. But the Arabs who were to take over soon gave up. Twenty-five years later, the Finnish company Botnia has built a state-of-the-art pulp processing plant in Fray Bentos, the largest in the world. But while most residents welcome the arrival of a new employer, residents of Gualeguaychú, Argentina, just across the border, are organizing a lengthy protest for fear of environmental pollution and a general mistrust of multinational corporations.
