Dutch Approach plot
The Free South Moluccan Youth not only strived for a free Ambon, but also for recognition by the Dutch government. Their violent train hijacks at Wijster and De Punt and occupations of the consulate and a school put the Moluccans, who had always felt ignored in the Netherlands, at the center of attention. The Dutch approach, known abroad as the Dutch Approach, consisted of wasting time and talking flat. But at De Punt, military action was eventually taken hard. In a previously unknown evaluation, the then Prime Minister Joop den Uyl called it an 'execution'. Director René Roelofs reconstructs the story chronologically and almost exclusively by editing interviews with hijackers, hostages and involved ministers such as Dries van Agt and Max van der Stoel. Roelofs pays extensive attention to the decision-making processes and the accompanying discussions.
