Last Words portrays the writer Michel Houellebecq who switched from literature to film because he wanted to get closer to 'the unspeakable', the 'oceanic feeling' of 'being absorbed in something bigger than yourself', which he often talks about. The documentary is a search for the deeper motives for making the feature film 'The Possibility of an Island'. The emotional motivations of the author are examined, as well as those of some important people around him: the camerawoman Jeanne Lapoirie, the first assistant Hubert Engamarre, the line producer Philippe Delest and the actors Patrick Bauchau and Benoît Magimel. For Houellebecq, the production is in fact a pilgrimage to lost happiness, with flowers being laid on the grave of his impossible love in every scene. In this way, during the traveling circus of the film set, a moving portrait of this writer is created.
