De Vertolker plot
The Iraqi refugee Fadil is a telephone interpreter. In his attic, he translates telephone conversations between, for example, an immigration officer and an asylum seeker who has exhausted all legal remedies, during a police interrogation, a doctor's visit or a lawsuit. "I'm your interpreter, I'm impartial and I'm not interfering in this conversation," he says at the beginning of each contact. But although he lives with his family in the Netherlands, he has close relatives who still live in war zones. What does it do to him when he is faced with dilemmas through the conversations, relives his own story and has to listen powerlessly?
